"Paul Williams Investigations," Lynn answers. "Hi, Lynn, it's Cricket. I'm really backed up in my day's activities and I'm not going to be able to make dinner again tonight." Lynn gets a big smile on her face but tries to sound professional on the phone. "Well, what should I do?" "Could you tell Paul I'm sorry and maybe fill in for me this evening?" Lynn pauses for a moment so as not to sound too eager and then says, "I could do that." "Thanks, Lynn. I'll owe you." "Hey, Gracie!" Tony says to Grace for the 10,000th time as she fails to notice yet again that he's staked out her favorite hangout and is sure to be there every time she arrives. "Tony, why don't you make like a tree and leave," she says in her best attempt to speak in the same ancient dialect that he speaks. "Look, you think I can't take a hint? Ok, I give up. I'm fire and you're ice and we were not made to be together." "You're up to something. You wouldn't give up that easily. Come on, spill it," she says. "No, really, I swear. I'm on the level Gracie. But there is something maybe we could still do for one another..." It's Paul's office again. Paul comes out whistling. "You sound like you're in a good mood, boss." "Oh, I am, Lynn. I have a very special evening planned with Chris tonight." "Really? What kind of evening?" "Well, I don't know. Chris was supposed to make the plans and let me know." "Hmm. Well, I guess you'd better get back to work so that you're ready when you're contacted," Lynn says, hurrying him back into his office. As soon as the door is closed, she picks up the phone and dials. "Genoa City Hotel," we hear the voice on the other end say. "I have some very special arrangements I'd like to make," Lynn begins, as we fade to commercial. Phyllis is listening to happy love songs on the radio and looking dreamy-eyed. Danny walks in from the bedroom, and kisses her. "I'm on my way to rehearsal. Is everything ready for our marriage tomorrow?" Phyllis gets a shiver. "Everything I can think of Danny. Oh, Danny, you don't know happy you've made me." "I think it will be good for both of us, Phyllis. Anyway, I have to run. Kiss little Daniel for me, ok?" He doesn't wait for the answer and rushes out the door. The music on the radio is broken into in a way that probably hasn't happened in any city but Genoa City since 1950. "We interrupt this program to bring you some news about the attempt on the lives of prominent Genoa City public defender Christine Blair and equally prominent Genoa City private detective Paul Williams. A suspect has been named in the moldy, two-year-old case." Phyllis looks surprised. "A suspect?" she asks worriedly. "A mister Fred Jones of East Elm Street." the radio seems to reply. She makes a facial expression like she has no idea who this is, but the radio report continues on. "Mr. Jones, who was arrested just a few moments ago, will stand trial tomorrow at noon at the Genoa City Courthouse. Prosecutors say that while the defendant denies the charges, the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming and the case is open and shut." "Wow..." Phyllis says. "And I was so afraid they were going to have traced me. All that fake data I had put in the rental car computer must have helped them find this poor guy." "Hi, Boss. You've received instructions for dinner." "Great, Lynn, when will she be here." "She won't. You are to go to the Genoa City Hotel, room 696, at 6:30pm. A key in your name will be waiting at the desk. If no one is there when you arrive, you're to take a shower and wait." "Wow. Sounds pretty exciting. Chris is hardly ever this ambitious--she usually has so much work to do. Maybe she's finally decided it's time to relax and enjoy life a little--it's sure about time. Thanks, Lynn." "Any time, Boss. Uh, I have to go run some errands; can you do without me for a while?" "I'm in such a good mood now, Lynn, you can take the rest of the afternoon off." Lynn glances at the clock, which says 4:15 and suppresses a smirk. She packs her things and heads out. Back at the Crimson Lights. "Something we could do for one another? Yeah, right. I've heard THAT line before, Tony," Grace groans. "Look, I've heard the marriages at the Newman house are not in good shape. Suppose you and I pretended to work together as a team, but really we worked together to prod things so that Sharon and Cole got together." "Sharon and Cole??" Grace asks. "Now why would I want to do that. Sharon and Cole are very nice people--I wouldn't want to hurt them." He nods. "But getting nice people together isn't hurting them... And it would leave two other people free." "TWO other people?" Tony nods. "Victoria for me," he begins as she starts to say "No" again, "and Nick for you." She stops and thinks. "Tony, I'm starting to remember why I once liked you. Let's talk about this some more." It's 6:30pm at the Genoa City Hotel. Paul enters and gets a key, then heads up in the elevator to his room. "Hello?" he calls into the room. "Anybody home?" There is no answer. He shrugs and gets ready to shower. The Y&R buttcam sneaks a generous little peek for the women in the audience as he enters the shower and the steam takes us to commercial. Back from commercial and the shower is ending. Paul comes out into the main room of the hotel in a towel and finds a note on the bed in an ornate script. It offers him a blindfold which he is to attach firmly. "Oh, and drop that towel. You won't need it," the note says. He smiles and takes the blindfold and puts it on. Cut to his ankles, where the towel falls. Paul sits on the bed. He feels a hand on his cheek and starts to say "Hi" but a finger touches his lips as if to be silent. The hands slide to his chest and start to push him onto his back. The camera draws back and we see it's Lynn "going for it"... As the camera turns politely to a view of the sunset on the GC skyline, we hear Paul saying "Wowww, I thought you said you wouldn't ever--" but he is stopped again. Cut to the Chapel. A small audience of Genoa City folk have been assembled. Cricket says to Paul, "I'm sorry about last night. I hope you don't mind that I asked Lynn to fill in for me." Paul is startled but manages to keep Cricket from seeing it. He gives Lynn a quick glance and she smiles back, perhaps slightly embarrassed but still obviously pleased with herself. "Oh, uh, that's ok. Yeah, Lynn filled in. It was great, thanks." "Well, I hope it wasn't toooo great," Cricket says. Paul feigns a frown at her, "Chris, you know I'm blind to anyone but you." She smiles, foolishly reassured. "It was no problem, really, Chris," Lynn volunteers cheerfully. "You know me," Lynn continues, "always happy to lend a helping hand when something comes up on short notice." Danny enters the chapel, interrupting the innuendo-fest. "I just can't figure out where she is," he says. Paul tries to calm him, "Danny, you know how much she's always wanted this. Wild horses couldn't keep her from being here." But the camera cuts oddly away to another scene, in the Genoa City Courthouse. Joanie, Little Daniel, and Phyllis are present in the audience area. Phyllis wears her wedding gown. She looks longingly to little Danny, then rises to interrupt the assembled court. "Your honor," says Phyllis as she stands, "I'd like to address the court. A great injustice is being done to an innocent man and I can't stand by and watch it happen..."
