In plain English, these are the morals from Episode 84:
I admit--I'm rewarmings some plot leftovers I had laying around in a file of half-written episodes here. But it goes with the food metaphor of the title for me to use leftovers this way. And anyway, I really did want to make some serious remarks about the recent plot points. By way of penance, a new episode will follow tomorrow with fresher material.
Also, I do recognize I've made a recent shift in the style of AWO to use whole episodes on a single plot. That's not intended to be a permanent change of style. The next episode will mark a return to the more conventional hash of several different plot chunks stirred in together.
Well, enough with the food metaphors. On to the meat of the matter...
Well, it should be pretty obvious where this was coming from. Where on earth did Jill get this idea of giving Nina a job at Jabot? She's independently wealthy! And more than that, she has no special skills that Jabot would be seeking.
It's a good thing Nina didn't take the job on the show, too, because then we'd have had to endure what we're seeing for Grace right now--rave reviews about performance that is not in any way the result of the person being qualified for the job they were given. The way these sometimes employees get ahead (Grace spends very little time at work) is a real insult to the hard-working viewers who struggled to find a job in the first place and who have to work very hard even just to keep their job. Fast-track rises like we see on Y&R don't happen in real life--at least not with that frequency--and it has to be demoralizing to those who are doing what it really takes to see this kind of `sailing through'.
I'll give the show credit for one thing. Victoria sure did look like she was on the verge of leaving town in a bad mood the way Victor did when he met Hope. It was nice not to see that error repeated... I repeated it here only because it left me the nice opening for Nina.
On the other hand, as the remark about the job as a birthday present was meant to allude to, the whole concept that this was an "earned" thing and not a "Newman freebie" was ridiculous. Yes, maybe she did get this because she had shown good returns on her division. But no way can you say she didn't get it because she was a Newman. What 21-year-old gets a division to play with just to find out whether they can make good returns on it? So that stuff was really bugging me, too.
When Miguel came in with the dinner and Victoria was looking so sad, I really was thinking it'd be nice if she let him sit down and they had a nice dinner together. He could be a good friend at least, even if they didn't hit it off. And who knows? Maybe more.
That's all for Episode 84's morals.
